Living My Values When It Matters Most
Nov 12, 2024
Losing is a hard pill to swallow, and I’m still feeling it. I’m not here to downplay the frustration, the anger, or the doubts that come with it. But I am here to say that this moment is about more than loss—it’s about choosing how I want to move forward.
There’s a whole community of people who feel what I feel and want what I want. We want a world where honesty, integrity, and purpose don’t have to come at the cost of kindness and respect. I feel deeply connected to others in this fight for truth. But I also know that my path—my voice—is uniquely mine to define. And this truth...holds a lot of responsibility...and excitement.
Recognizing Shared Frustrations
In many ways, I understand and even agree with the frustrations of those who don’t see things the way I do. We’re in a world where the system is deeply flawed, and people everywhere are feeling it. I want to trust the institutions that impact my life and the lives of those I love—the government, our health and education systems, our financial structures. Like so many others, I long for an affordable society that truly values fairness and integrity.
But there’s a line I can’t cross: I can’t support any leader or ideology that compromises integrity for power, especially one that speaks in ways I find divisive or harmful. When I see leaders or groups resort to ugly, disdainful rhetoric, or when I feel like those who are supposed to lead are actively stoking division, I have to step back. It’s one thing to want change; it’s another to believe that division, dishonesty, or degradation of others is the answer. My commitment is to integrity and unity, even if it feels like the harder choice.
Determination to Heal Rather Than Divide
The anger is real, and I won’t hide it. But I know that just because something feels powerful doesn’t mean it’s constructive. I’m choosing to let my anger fuel change in a way that heals, rather than divides.
It’s easy to let pain turn into bitterness. But I believe that real strength lies in finding ways to channel that pain into a purpose that lifts everyone involved—even those on the other side. Healing doesn’t mean silence, and it doesn’t mean compromise. It means speaking truth with a heart open to peace and inclusion.
My focus right now isn’t on pointing fingers; it’s on finding the courage to heal the rifts I see without adding to them. That’s the choice I’m making—no matter how hard it is, I choose to be a voice of truth, not division.
Commitment to Honesty, Delivered with Respect
Going forward, I’m done filtering myself out of fear of offense. But I’m also committed to grounding my words in respect, because honest words can still be kind.
Too many times, I’ve held back, choosing caution over courage. I realize now that if I want real change, I have to speak with clarity and courage—even if it means discomfort. From here on, my commitment is to speak my truth directly, but always in a way that shows respect for everyone involved. I refuse to compromise my beliefs just to “win.” I’d rather go down being true to myself.
Honesty doesn’t have to be harsh, and kindness doesn’t have to be weak. My goal is to speak with strength, balancing respect with truth, even in the hardest conversations.
Embracing an Inclusive Spiritual Path
Some speak as if they have the only truth. I believe that a spiritual connection is not about exclusivity but inclusion—it’s about creating a path where everyone is invited to walk together, each of us valued.
I’ve noticed how easy it is to fall into the trap of believing that one voice or one group has all the answers. But true spiritual alignment is not about being chosen; it’s about choosing compassion and respect as our guiding principles. I believe it’s possible to be both critical of our institutions and hopeful for their reform without sacrificing our integrity or our unity as a people.
My belief isn’t that I—or anyone else—has all the answers. Rather, it’s that we find strength by inviting all voices in, valuing each person’s role in creating a better future.
Living Our Values, Even in the Hard Moments
At the end of the day, I want my actions to align with the values I hold, not just when it’s easy but especially when it’s hard. For me, that means standing firmly by my principles of honesty, respect, and truth, even when those who lead us don’t model those values.
Living our values becomes even more important in a world that often feels broken. I know the temptation to join in the anger and divisiveness, to hit back when leaders or voices on the other side say things that are, frankly, unacceptable. But my commitment isn’t to them; it’s to my own sense of truth, to creating the kind of unity and compassion I want to see in our future.
I’m determined to stand by my beliefs with courage, no matter what. For me, that means showing up with kindness, strength, and respect—even if it’s the harder path to walk.
A Vision for the Future
This journey isn’t about perfection or the need to have every answer right now. It’s about choosing each day to be a little braver, a little clearer, and a little kinder. I’d rather lose staying true to myself than win by compromising what I believe in. We’re here to be the change we want to see, and that means modeling the respect, unity, and honesty we’re looking for in our leaders.
“True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
This quote reminds us that peace isn’t about sidestepping conflict but rather about addressing it in a way that respects justice, unity, and compassion. I’m here to encourage you to join me in this journey. Let’s ask ourselves:
What values do we want to stand by, even in the hardest moments? How can we bring more respect, kindness, and truth into our conversations and lives?
Final Words
When I look back on my life, I don’t want to say that I won because I turned my back on what I knew was right. I’d rather stand firm on my values than stand on the podium, compromised.
So to everyone reading this: Keep your faith in the strength of truth, in the power of respect, and in the change that kindness can create. Let’s choose a path where we don’t just win arguments—we win peace, we win unity, and we win a world worth leaving to those who come after us.
In Strength and Integrity,
