Finding Calm on Election Day
Nov 05, 2024
Today is a big day, and I know for many of us, the tension and anticipation feel close to overwhelming. As Election Day unfolds, we may feel a surge of emotions—from excitement to worry to outright stress. But today, I want to focus on how we can stay calm, centered, and at peace, no matter what the outcome.
Acknowledge the Uncertainty
Uncertainty isn’t easy; as humans, we naturally crave clarity and answers. On Election Day, that desire can skyrocket, and with it, our anxiety. But what I’ve come to understand is that sitting with the “unknowns” rather than trying to force answers can be surprisingly freeing. Allowing ourselves to exist in that in-between space, without the need to solve every worry, brings a certain peace.
Consider the fact that we’re not alone in feeling this uncertainty. Those around us—family members, friends, coworkers, even strangers—might be looking to us, consciously or not, for guidance. Maybe it’s the sweetness of a child who glances up, noticing our tension, and takes it on without even realizing it. Or a parent or grandparent, feeling that worry but hoping for some stability and calm from those around them. When we embrace calm in the face of the unknown, we model resilience for others.
Our energy is contagious. Just as we’re affected by the calm or anxiety around us, others pick up on ours. By choosing to approach today with a sense of inner steadiness—no matter how uncertain things feel—we offer reassurance to those who might feel adrift. And in turn, their calm will ripple out to others, creating a quiet strength that moves beyond just one person.
This isn’t about pretending everything’s fine or ignoring real emotions. Instead, it’s about showing up authentically with an inner sense of peace, choosing not to let the uncertainty take us under. With that approach, we can be a light, steadying ourselves and those who might be watching or leaning on us.
Anchor in Simple Practices
Today’s a perfect day to lean into the small things that bring peace—a few deep breaths, stepping outside for fresh air, or practicing a short meditation. Sometimes just taking a moment to look at the sky, stretch, or enjoy a hot cup of tea can be enough to bring us back to the present.
These small practices are anchors, grounding us when emotions start to rise. They remind us that while the world may feel chaotic, we have the power to create moments of calm. These tiny choices can be the difference between getting swept up in the anxiety and staying rooted in a sense of peace.
Let Go of What You Can’t Control
I know firsthand that focusing on what we can’t change only fuels our stress. But releasing that, even in small amounts, brings a sense of relief and a shift toward a more positive energy. Today, let’s remind ourselves to let go of the things that are beyond us and turn our focus inward, toward peace and resilience.
Imagine it’s like putting down a heavy weight, one that doesn’t need to be carried all day. In letting go, we’re not ignoring reality—we’re choosing to keep our energy for what truly matters and for the moments where we can actually make a difference.
Find Moments of Joy and Gratitude
Even on a day like today, small joys are everywhere—maybe it’s watching a pet do something silly, hearing the laughter of a child, or sharing a quiet moment with someone we love. There’s a sweetness in noticing the little things: the warmth of a grandparent’s embrace, the curiosity in a child’s eyes, or even the comfort of knowing a friend is just a call away. These small joys and moments of gratitude help us stay grounded, making a huge difference in how we experience today and keeping us connected to a sense of calm.
You are not Alone
However you’re feeling today, know that it’s okay. Take a breath, find a calm moment, and remember that you’re not alone in navigating these feelings. Together, we’ll get through this day with a sense of peace and resilience, finding joy in the small moments and choosing calm amidst the chaos.
Love is all there is,
Diana
